Reading Series One

Reading Series One materials are appropriate for first grade students on grade level and for older students in need of intervention. These materials include a book set, Foundational Skills Teacher’s Guides for phonics instruction, and Close Reading Teacher’s Guides for comprehension instruction. The materials can be purchased separately or can be used together to deliver a full complement of reading instruction.

The Reading Series One Classroom Set contains suggested materials for delivering a full complement of Reading Series One instruction to a small group. Each set includes one Reading Series One Foundational Skills Teacher's Guide, six word chain card decks, one Reading Series One Close Reading Teacher's Guide, and six copies of each Reading Series One book. For whole-group instruction, the purchase of additional book sets is recommended.

Reading Series One Foundational Skills Teacher’s Guides contain explicit, systematic, book-by-book instruction that supports teachers in the delivery of evidence-based routines, with a focus on introducing open syllables and contrasting them with closed syllables, as well as introducing students to their first strategy for independently dividing and reading multisyllabic words. The instruction also includes teacher-directed analysis of morphemes, such as inflectional suffixes.  A key component of Reading Series One foundational skills instruction is solidifying students’ ability to read and spell single-syllable and multisyllabic closed-syllable words before they learn to read and spell words with more complex syllable types and spelling patterns, which are introduced in later series. After instruction, students can apply what they have learned to Reading Series One books. Foundational Skills Teacher's Guides include book-by-book progress monitoring assessments and periodic formative assessments.

Reading Series One Close Reading Teacher’s Guides contain scripted, book-by-book instruction that supports teachers as they introduce students to story grammar using the Reading Series One Story Grammar Bookmarks. Teachers will model or scaffold students in the process of analyzing the setup, initiating event, and resolution of a story and provide students with opportunities to practice important strategic reading behaviors, such as thinking and talking about the text and illustrations, understanding nuances in word meaning, making inferences, deliberately reflecting on understanding, grappling with and identifying text structure, and examining the author’s craft.

The Reading Series One Book Set is a collection of engaging and authentic decodable books in a range of text types that includes narratives and poetry. These texts are designed to give students repeated practice in reading single-syllable and multisyllabic closed-syllable words and the most common high-frequency words. This intentional, repeated practice allows students to develop a solid understanding of foundational phonics skills, develop reading stamina, and increase their reading rate, fluency, and prosody in significantly longer and more complex texts.

Please note that Reading Series One books are more sophisticated versions of their Emergent Reader Series “companion” texts. Since the rate of mastery of foundational skills can vary as students transition from the partial- into the full-alphabetic phase of word-reading development, companion texts can promote opportunities for differentiated instruction.
