    The Way to Teach

My son and I read one of these a night and he is making great progress in reading. I need to help him with the new sounds and it takes a while to learn phonetics but they work wonderfully. Completely worth the initially duanting price.

    Wonderfully appealing and well-sequenced

This is the best emergent reader series I've found. (I am an early childhood educator and have evaluated a lot of emergent reading curricula.) The beautifully illustrated books convey meaning, as well as carefully sequenced phonics concepts, and children will find even the simplest stories engaging and challenging. The books have an authentic, high-quality appeal, so children will feel excited about learning to read from the very start. These books are highly decodable but also offer many opportunities for developing vocabulary and comprehension - not a given in many competitors' simplistic or boring examples. But because the books' phonics objectives are so carefully sequenced, children don't have to struggle with too many sight words or randomly introduced phonics concepts that seem out of place. In other words: children can read successful with a higher degree of independence and less scaffolding from the adult coach/teacher. That said, the teacher guides are extremely comprehensive and full of excellent tips and suggested activities, all of which are evidence-based and reflect current best practices on reading instruction. I only wish these products were more affordable; it's a stretch for me to purchase them. But I can understand why they cost more than the typical series; the quality is significantly higher from both pedagogic and aesthetic perspectives. Highly recommend.

great decodable books for our emergent readers

There are very few books available that are truly decodable so these are a must for any classroom/school library. I just wish there were more of these!

    Fantastic Set for New Readers

I'm so glad I found out about this series (it was listed in a book I was reading about helping children learn how to read). I love that this series introduces letters and sounds one at a time or in very small increments, and that the stories are engaging. Additionally, all the books have lovely illustrations to accompany the text, and these illustrations are such that they do not encourage my daughter to guess the words by looking at what's in the pictures (unlike some other phonics books I've encountered). Also, the length of each book and the amount of text on each page seems just about right for the reading level each book is at. I feel that all of the other phonics sets I've encountered do not introduce new sounds and concepts very methodically, which then requires me to help our daughter figure out words more often. For example, the Biscuit I Can Read Phonics series starts with, well, the word Biscuit, and already in Book 6 there are more advanced reading concepts (the words "tulips" and "fruits"). I can tell a lot of thought has gone into the development of the Emergent Reader Series. I had to carefully consider the cost when I purchased the set, but now I'm really glad I invested in this series.

Description

The Emergent Reader Series Book Set is a collection of engaging, meaningful, and comprehensible decodable books in a range of text types that includes narratives, informational texts, and poetry. These texts are tied to a systematic phonics scope & sequence and give the most novice readers practice reading single consonants, short vowels, several high-utility digraphs and endings, and high-frequency words.

Please note that Emergent Reader Series “companion” texts are simpler versions of Reading Series One. Since the rate of mastery of foundational skills can vary as students transition from the partial- into the full-alphabetic phase of word-reading development, companion texts can promote opportunities for differentiated instruction.
